Bad Credit Rating – What to Do about Your Bad Credit Rating
While having a bad credit rating may not be the end of the world, it certainly can seem like it when you are
sitting in the bank and the mortgage officer tells you that because of it you cannot have a mortgage to buy your
dream home. The number of people who currently have a poor credit score is on the rise as the national economy
continues to crumble. If you find yourself in this situation there are steps you can take to improve a bad credit
rating and get your finances back on track.

For most people a bad credit rating did not happen
overnight, it takes a few missed payments here, a small default loan there or a court judgment for payment
somewhere in the past. All of these things add up and once they are on your credit report you will have to work to
have them removed or cleared up.
If you have a history of late payments, you need to start making sure that you do not continue in this vein. You
can also contact the lender in question and see if you can negotiate a deal with them that states, if you make your
payments on time for one year they will remove the late payments status from your credit report.
If there are defaults on your record you can contact the company and make arrangements to pay off the debt
providing they clear up the entry on your credit report.
For judgments you can make sure that the debt is paid in full and have an entry made in your credit file to show
this so that when a lender pulls you credit record they will see that the judgment has been paid off.
If you have done everything in your power to improve your bad credit rating and it still is not where you need
it to be, there are still steps you can take to bring it up slowly. While you may not qualify for the premium
credit cards with their low interest rates there is such a thing as a bad credit rating credit card. These cards
carry a much higher interest rate and often require you to put up a deposit to secure them, but as long as you make
sure that all of your payments are paid on time they will help to raise your bad credit rating over time.
If you are going to apply for these cards you need to make sure you read the terms and conditions very
carefully.
Most of them have annual fees, maintenance fees, high interest rates and large penalties if you are late on a
single payment, not to mention the huge jump in interest if you miss just one payment. There are good cards
available but you need to make sure you look at everything carefully before you accept one of these credit
cards.
In recent years there were plenty of lending institutions that were offering bad credit rating mortgages, however in light of the recent
changes in the world economy these have become an endangered species. The number of people who have defaulted on
their mortgages in the last year has driven most banks and finance companies to stop offering these types of
mortgages. However they can still be found but instead of shopping around for them yourself you might be better
off to use the services of an independent advisor who specializes in finding mortgages for those who have a bad
credit rating.

This way he will only pull your credit file once instead of your going to several lending
agencies and having it pulled, remember every time your credit report is checked it puts a hit on
your credit record. If you have it checked too many times it can affect you in two ways, one it
dings your credit score every time it is check if the checks are all close together and two other
lenders can see the checks and will assume you are being turned down instead of just shopping
around.
If you do get offered a mortgage makes sure that the terms do not balloon out of control in a
few years or that the interest rates are not something ridiculous, you are going to have to pay
higher interest rates but there is a difference between higher rates and being taken to the
cleaners.
If you have any doubts at all you can always seek the advice or the CAB or other consumer credit
counseling agencies before you consider signing the contract. Just because you have a bad credit
rating does not mean you should not get the things you want, but it may mean that you will have to
pay a little more for them.
